The gesture was aimed at recognising Mr. Hackman’s remarkable contributions to Ghana’s film industry and his longstanding role in mentoring and nurturing generations of actors, actresses, producers and filmmakers.

Speaking at the event, Dzifa Agbetepey expressed appreciation to the veteran filmmaker for giving her a breakthrough opportunity that helped launch her career. She recalled that Steve Asare Hackman produced and directed OH Mother, the movie that earned her first major lead role and brought her widespread recognition.

According to her, the tribute was not only a celebration of his professional achievements but also an acknowledgment of the fatherly guidance and support he has provided to many people within the industry.

Steve Asare Hackman is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Ghana’s modern film industry. He began his career in Liberia during the late 1970s and 1980s before returning to Ghana in 1989 with filmmaking equipment and a collection of celluloid films that supported local productions during the early stages of the industry’s development.

Through his production company, Hacky Films, he played a significant role in the growth of Ghana’s video film era, helping to create opportunities for emerging talents and contributing to the expansion of the country’s movie sector.

Beyond filmmaking, Mr. Hackman also served as President of the Film Producers Association of Ghana from 2013 to 2016, where he advocated for stronger anti-piracy measures to safeguard the interests of Ghanaian filmmakers.

Dzifa Agbetepey and Royal Women in Cinema Ghana described him as a trailblazer whose dedication, mentorship and contributions to Ghanaian cinema have left a lasting impact on the industry and will continue to inspire future generations of creatives.
