A mechanized borehole has been constructed for Yong M/A Primary School in the Savelugu Municipality to ensure pupils and students access to potable water to promote sanitation and hygiene.

The facility, which would also serve residents of Yong and neighboring communities including Challam, Nyetua and Damdu, has two polytanks with the capacity to store about 8000 liters of water with six standing pipes to help address the perennial water shortage experienced in the area.

The Yong M/A Primary School has also been provided with 50 dual desks and 26 school uniforms to help address school drop-out situation recorded in the area, which is often influenced by lack of teaching and learning facilities. The mechanized borehole, school uniforms and the furniture were provided by Engen Ghana Limited, an energy company focused on downstream refined petroleum products, in collaboration with School for Life, an NGO.

Mr. Brent Nartey, Managing Director, Engen Ghana Limited, speaking at a durbar at Yong to hand over the facility and the items to the authorities, said the gesture formed part of the company’s commitment to supporting the vision of leaving no one behind. He said it was also in line with the company’s social responsibility, which aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals four and six to enhance quality education and improved clean water and sanitation by 2030.

He said the water facility was to improve sanitation amongst especially adolescent girls as they needed fresh water and sanitary facilities to concentrate during lessons at school. Madam Wedad Sayibu, Director of School for Life lauded the partnership between School for Life and Engen Ghana Limited, which had supported efforts at improving education in communities.

She urged residents to take advantage of the facility to enroll their wards in school and encouraged them to stay and complete their education. Mr. Iddrisu Wumpini, Savelugu Municipal Assembly’s School Performance Improvement Officer, expressed gratitude to the partners for the support saying it would go a long way to improve education outcomes in the area.

Yong Koko Naa Ibrahim Haruna, an Elder, who represented the Chief of Yong, also commended the partners for the gesture saying it would address education and health needs of the people. He appealed for a dam in the area to encourage an all-year-round farming.
