The grand ballroom of the Alisa Hotel was abuzz with excitement as old friends and classmates gathered to celebrate the 90th anniversary dinner/dance of the St Augustine’s Past Students Union (APSU).

The event was a spectacular fusion of nostalgia, pride, and exuberance as alumni mingled, reminiscing the old times and sharing stories of their journeys since leaving the hallowed halls of St Augustine’s College.  From the vintage charm of the 1950s to the modern energy of the 2000s, year groups spanning more than half a century converged to rekindle their friendship.

The evening began with a cocktail reception, filled with laughter and eagerness to reconnect with long-lost classmates. As the music begun and lights dimmed, the crowd took to the dance floor, dancing their hearts out to soothing reggae and Ghana’s iconic highlife music.

Notable figures and awardees in attendance included Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, a seasoned politician, Diplomat and member of the 1961 year group;  Ambassador Kabral Blay Amihere, 1970 year group; Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, a politician and entrepreneur, 1971 group; Prof Ernest Kofi Abotsi, Dean, UPSA Law School, 1993 group, and Sammi Awuku, MP, Akuapim North, 2001 year group.

Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Chairman of the occasion, said St. Augustine’s College gave him a solid foundation and developed his personality, and that he owed everything he had achieved to the school.  “Before St. Augustine’s College, I had never eaten with a cutlery, I had never worn shoes, and I had never slept on a bed. I owe everything I have and have made to this school, St Augustine’s,” he said.

Mr Owusu-Agyemang urged the alumni, especially the younger generation, to work hard and give back to their alma mater. Dr Ernest Anthony Osei, President, APSU, conferred awards of excellence on his compatriots, saying it marked a watershed moment in the history of the Union.  “I would like to pay glowing tribute to our Founding Fathers and express our heartfelt appreciation to all ‘APSUnians’ across all year groups for their commitment and hard work in advancing the cause of APSU and the College,” he said.

In all, 90 ‘APSUnians’ were awarded for their contributions to education and national development with five personalities receiving posthumous awards whilst five former headmasters were also recognised.  Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyemang gave a cheque for Gh¢100,000 towards the preparation and celebration of the school’s centenary anniversary. Dr Anthony Osei and his year group (1980) donated Gh¢200,000 towards the 100 years anniversary.
