The Netherlands have reportedly appointed Barcelona legend Xavi Hernández as their new head coach, marking a major new chapter for the national team and the former Spain international.
The 46-year-old is said to be returning to management after a two-year break from the game, taking charge following Ronald Koeman’s departure after what was described as a disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign.
Xavi has reportedly signed a four-year contract that will see him lead the Dutch national team through the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
His appointment brings together two footballing traditions with deep historical connections, with Xavi’s possession-based philosophy strongly influenced by the Dutch football principles that shaped Barcelona’s modern identity.
The former Barcelona midfielder previously succeeded Koeman at the Catalan club in 2022, inheriting a team undergoing a difficult transition.
He quickly helped revive Barcelona’s fortunes, guiding the club to the LaLiga title in the 2022/23 season and the Spanish Super Cup in 2023.
Although his final season at Barcelona ended without a major trophy and eventually led to his departure in 2024, Xavi remains highly regarded for his football philosophy, which emphasises possession, intelligent movement and technical quality.
Those principles were heavily influenced by Barcelona’s academy and the ideas of Dutch football icon Johan Cruyff.
Xavi has also spoken positively about the influence of Dutch football on his career, particularly through coaches such as Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard. His philosophy reflects what has traditionally been associated with both Barcelona and the Netherlands — technical quality, possession and attacking football.
As a player, Xavi enjoyed an illustrious career with Barcelona and Spain. He won numerous domestic and European trophies with Barcelona and played a key role in Spain’s golden generation.
With the national team, he won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Xavi began his coaching career at Al Sadd in Qatar in 2019, where he enjoyed success before returning to Barcelona.
Taking charge of the Netherlands would represent a new challenge for the former midfielder, who would be expected to develop a team capable of competing at the highest level while maintaining a clear footballing identity.
The Netherlands possess a talented generation of players and a rich footballing tradition. Xavi’s emphasis on attacking, possession-based football could provide the team with a distinctive identity while creating opportunities for younger players to develop.
With the 2028 European Championship and 2030 World Cup on the horizon, the appointment would give Xavi considerable time to implement his ideas and build a team around his philosophy.
For Xavi, the Netherlands job would represent an opportunity to begin another significant chapter in his coaching career. For the Dutch national team, it could signal the start of a new era built around technical quality, possession and attacking football.
