Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed his profound sorrow following the tragic death of six young women during a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Dr. Bawumia described the incident as heartbreaking and offered prayers for strength and comfort to the bereaved families, as well as a swift recovery for the injured.

He wrote: “My condolences go out to the families of the young Ghanaians who lost their lives today at the El-Wak Stadium. May the injured recover quickly, and the souls of our departed ladies rest in peace.”

The stampede occurred when thousands of applicants gathered at the El-Wak Sports Stadium for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise. Witnesses reported that overcrowding and intense pushing at the entry gates led to chaos, resulting in injuries and fatalities.

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that six people — all female applicants — lost their lives, while several others sustained various degrees of injuries. The injured are currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital, with some reported to be in critical condition.

In response, the GAF has suspended the recruitment exercise and assured the public of its full cooperation with ongoing investigations to identify the causes of the tragedy and prevent future occurrences.

The incident has drawn widespread sorrow and reignited concerns about crowd control and safety management during major national recruitment events.
