The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to present a comprehensive report on his mediation efforts in the Bawku conflict to President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, December 16, as part of ongoing efforts to secure lasting peace in the area.

Earlier in 2025, President Mahama appointed the Asantehene to spearhead mediation aimed at resolving the long-standing chieftaincy dispute in the conflict-prone municipality. The mediation process officially began in April, with Otumfuo holding separate meetings with representatives of the rival factions to initiate dialogue.

Although the talks were temporarily suspended, discussions resumed in May 2025 and have since helped to reduce tensions, leading to a period of relative calm in Bawku.

The report is expected to highlight key developments, progress achieved so far, and recommendations that will inform the next phase of government intervention toward restoring sustainable peace and stability in the area.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces have stepped up security operations in Bawku to maintain law and order while the mediation process continues.

Speaking on Monday, December 15, the Commander of the 11th Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces in the Upper East Region, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Boako, expressed optimism that the combination of enhanced security and traditional mediation would bring an end to the violence.

He noted that ongoing monitoring, coupled with recent engagements between the Asantehene and the feuding groups, would help curb attacks and allow residents to return to normal life.

Bawku has witnessed recurring violence over the years as a result of chieftaincy disputes, prompting repeated calls for sustained dialogue and strengthened security measures to ensure lasting peace.
