The Office of the National Chief Imam has announced that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Ramadan 2026 will be observed on Wednesday, February 18.
The date corresponds with the 29th day of Sha’ban on the Islamic calendar, in accordance with the traditional moon-sighting practice observed by Muslims.
If the crescent is successfully sighted that evening, Thursday, February 19, 2026, will be declared the first day of Ramadan. However, if the moon is not sighted, Thursday will complete 30 days of Sha’ban, with fasting set to commence on Friday, February 20, 2026.
The decision was taken during the 32nd Annual National Ramadan Conference held in Takoradi, in Ghana’s Western Region.
The announcement forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure uniformity in the observance of Ramadan across the country.
As is customary, regional representatives are expected to communicate verified moon sightings to the appropriate authorities for confirmation.
The National Chief Imam or his designated representative will formally announce the official commencement of the fasting period to the Muslim community.
