The University of Media Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has emerged as the winner of the 2026 Commonwealth Day National Debate held at Parliament of Ghana on March 9. The competition was organised under the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”

Six universities participated in the contest, including Central University, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University for Development Studies, University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, University of Ghana and UniMAC’s Institute of Journalism. The debate focused on the role of young people in promoting cooperation and shared prosperity among countries within the Commonwealth.

A standout performance by UniMAC-IJ student Titus Owusu Darko played a key role in securing the victory for his institution. His compelling argument against the motion that Ghana’s democracy translates into economic opportunities for graduates earned him the top honour, ahead of competitors from several leading universities.

The 22-year-old received a prize package that included a GH¢10,000 cash award, a gold medal, a certificate and the ceremonial mace, a symbol of parliamentary authority.

His performance drew commendation from officials at the Parliament of Ghana, including Kate Addo and Afia Tenge (Rtd.). Speaking after the event, Darko dedicated the achievement to his family and mentors, noting that the success was the result of dedication and perseverance.

UniMAC’s victory marks an important milestone for the institution as it continues to strengthen its reputation in academic debate and public speaking in Ghana. The competition brought together top student debaters from across the country to demonstrate their skills in parliamentary debate, critical thinking and persuasive communication.
