The National Identification Authority (NIA) is preparing to launch a nationwide registration exercise targeting approximately 3.1 million children aged 6 to 14, starting in May 2026.
The initiative is part of the Authority’s mandate to ensure that all Ghanaians are enrolled in the national identification system.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on April 10, the NIA’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah Darlas, explained that the registration process has been organised into three age groups—0 to 5, 6 to 14, and 15 and above—to make participation more convenient.
He noted that while about 18.7 million Ghana Cards have already been issued to individuals aged 15 and above, the current focus is on capturing children within the 6 to 14 age group.
Mr Darlas recalled that a similar exercise conducted in 2024 across 164 districts encountered challenges, including limited access to certain communities and network issues, though cards were eventually distributed.
Drawing from those experiences, the NIA plans to introduce instant card printing and issuance during the upcoming exercise to enhance efficiency and accessibility.
He added that children will be required to register alongside their parents, after which their details will be linked and cards issued immediately.
The exercise will begin in the Volta and Oti Regions before extending to the five northern regions. It will then move to the southern sector, covering areas such as Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Ashanti Regions.
