The Government of Ghana has distributed 8,500 laptops to partner institutions as it rolls out the first phase of the One Million Coders Programme across the country.
Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, handed over 6,500 Lenovo laptops to regional managers of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications and an additional 2,000 laptops to 12 universities in Accra.
He announced that the programme will officially begin on May 1, 2026, across 130 learning centres nationwide, with the goal of equipping one million young people with digital skills. To support implementation, 130 ICT personnel have been recruited to provide technical and administrative assistance.
The Minister noted that a pilot phase conducted in 2025 in Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Bolgatanga trained 859 participants out of about 90,000 applicants, with 1,000 individuals initially selected. He added that the selection and training process involved collaboration with academia, industry stakeholders, and partner institutions to ensure fairness and transparency.
He also praised MTN Ghana for pledging $2 million toward the initiative and encouraged other corporate organisations to support the programme.
According to him, the Ministry has signed agreements with various companies to help secure employment opportunities for participants and boost their competitiveness in the job market.
The initiative was originally launched in April 2025 by John Dramani Mahama as part of efforts to enhance digital skills and innovation in line with Ghana’s broader digital transformation agenda.
Participants will receive training in areas such as coding, web development, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data analysis.
