The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission has officially rescinded its earlier policy on retirement age and post-retirement contracts for senior academic staff in public universities.
The decision follows a directive from the Minister for Education after engagements with the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana.
In a letter dated April 27, 2026, GTEC confirmed that the withdrawal applies to the policy it issued on October 1, 2025. The Commission stated that the move is in line with the Minister’s instruction and is intended to allow for broader consultations with stakeholders across the tertiary education sector.
According to GTEC, the suspension of the directive will create room for dialogue aimed at building consensus and ensuring long-term sustainability within the system. It added that new guidelines will be introduced after consultations are completed.
The withdrawn policy had focused on retirement age limits and post-retirement arrangements for senior academic staff in public universities.
The communication, signed by Augustine Ocloo on behalf of the Director-General, was copied to key stakeholders, including vice-chancellors, the Ministry of Education, the Public Services Commission, as well as UTAG and the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG).
