The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has called off his planned “Thank You Tour” of the North East Region due to rising security concerns following a recent attack on a military convoy in Bawku.

A member of the Regional Security Council indicated that the decision was taken after consultations with security agencies, particularly in light of a violent incident in Binduri where unidentified attackers reportedly targeted a military escort team.

The suspended tour, which was scheduled for April 29 and 30, was expected to cover several constituencies including Yagaba, Walewale, Nalerigu, Bunkpurugu, Yunyoo, and Chereponi.

Security officials advised against proceeding with the visit as a precautionary step to protect the party leadership, supporters, and the general public, noting the potential for spillover effects from ongoing disturbances.

The tour forms part of Mr. Asiedu Nketiah’s post-election engagements to thank party supporters for their contributions. Its suspension has, however, disappointed many supporters who had anticipated his visit.

The Bawku enclave has experienced recurring tensions in recent times, with the latest attack further heightening security concerns in parts of the North East and Upper East regions.

The party has not yet announced new dates for the tour, while authorities continue to monitor the situation and have urged residents to remain calm.
