The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced an upward adjustment in utility tariffs, with electricity and water consumers expected to pay more starting July 1, 2026.

Under its third-quarter tariff review, electricity tariffs have been increased by 3.49 percent across all customer categories, while water tariffs have gone up by 0.85 percent.

In a statement released on June 22, 2026, the Commission explained that the adjustments are part of its routine quarterly review process, which ensures tariffs reflect prevailing economic and operational conditions affecting utility providers.

According to PURC, the review took into account key macroeconomic indicators such as the cedi-to-dollar exchange rate, inflation trends, the electricity generation mix, and the cost of natural gas used in power production.

The Commission said it used a weighted average exchange rate of GHS11.2228 to the US dollar, representing a slight depreciation of the cedi, alongside a three-month average inflation rate of 3.43 percent, which was lower than the previous quarter.

It also noted a marginal decline in the cost of natural gas, while the hydro-thermal power generation mix remained unchanged at 20.9 percent hydro and 79.1 percent thermal.

Based on these factors, PURC approved the 3.49 percent increase in electricity tariffs for residential, non-residential and special load customers.

For households, the lifeline electricity tariff for consumption up to 30 kilowatt-hours per month has risen from 86.9 pesewas to 89.93 pesewas per kilowatt-hour.

Water tariffs have also been adjusted upward across all consumer categories, including residential, commercial, industrial, public institutions and bulk users.

The residential lifeline water tariff for consumption up to five cubic metres has increased from 593.49 pesewas to 598.54 pesewas per cubic metre.

PURC stated that it remains committed to ensuring utility providers operate efficiently while maintaining service quality and value for money for consumers.

The Commission added that the new tariff structure will be published in the official gazette and on its website in due course.
