Journalists from 18 African Union (AU) Member States have completed the first leg of the AU Media Fellowship Programme’s European Study Tour, gaining first-hand insight into the Africa-European Union (AU-EU) Partnership through a week of engagements at key EU institutions in Brussels.
Organized by the European Union Delegation to the African Union in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the European External Action Service (EEAS), the programme brought together African media fellows to deepen their understanding of how the AU-EU Partnership is developed and implemented.
Throughout the week, fellows met policymakers, diplomats, and technical experts from the EEAS, European Parliament, European Commission, and Council of the European Union. Discussions focused on shared priorities including peace and security, youth empowerment, infrastructure, climate action, health, governance, and sustainable development under Agenda 2063.
The study tour aimed to strengthen journalists’ capacity to report accurately on Africa-Europe relations and translate complex policy issues into stories that resonate with citizens. Participants also explored the EU’s Global Gateway Africa-Europe Investment Package and learned about humanitarian response mechanisms at the Emergency Response Coordination Centre.
“The Fellowship is equipping African journalists with the knowledge and networks needed to connect policy with people,” said Ambassador Ali Yakoub Mahamoud, Permanent Representative of the African Union to the European Union.
The programme will continue in Germany, where fellows will focus on media innovation, strategic communication, and development cooperation before returning to complete their reporting projects on issues linked to Africa’s development agenda.
