Accra Golden Lions Club Donates 1,000 Books to Boost Literacy and Digital Innovation in Winneba

The Accra Golden Lions Club has donated more than 1,000 books to libraries and schools across seven communities in the Winneba area under its flagship “Golden Readers Project,” an initiative designed to promote literacy, critical thinking, and responsible digital engagement among young people.

Launched on Friday, the project combines traditional reading advocacy with modern digital empowerment, encouraging students to become creators and innovators rather than passive consumers of online content. The donated collection includes storybooks, textbooks, and other educational materials sourced from various parts of the world.

The books were presented during a hybrid ceremony that allowed Lions Club members to participate both physically and virtually from Accra, highlighting the project’s blend of technology and education.

This year’s initiative marks a shift in focus for the club. After supporting childhood cancer units through its “Golden Toys” project last year, the club turned its attention to literacy following concerns raised by library officials about the shortage of reading materials in local communities.

Speaking at the event, project lead and software engineer Nehemiah Attigah stressed the importance of reading in developing problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills among young people.

He encouraged students to make better use of digital platforms by seeking educational content, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), rather than relying solely on entertainment.

“You should aspire to be innovators and creators, not just consumers,” he told the students, emphasizing that reading remains the foundation for acquiring knowledge and building a successful future.

Renowned literacy advocate and guest speaker, Helena Asamoah-Hassan, joined the event virtually and underscored the importance of literacy in shaping successful lives. She also urged students and library staff to take proper care of the donated books to ensure they remain available for future generations.

Dr. Asamoah-Hassan advised readers against damaging books through improper handling and encouraged the use of bookmarks instead of folding pages. She further challenged library staff to continue advocating for additional support and resources in the years ahead.

The event also highlighted the value of community networks and volunteerism. Lion Sylvia, who relocated from Nigeria to Ghana in 2024, shared how membership in the Lions Club helped her establish meaningful personal and professional connections. She encouraged students to consider joining Leo and Lions clubs as they progress through their education.

The programme concluded with a spirited appreciation session for educators and library personnel before participants gathered in small groups to begin reading from the newly donated books.

The Golden Readers Project serves as a timely reminder that, in an era dominated by digital distractions, reading remains one of the most powerful tools for learning, innovation, and personal growth.

The Accra Golden Lions Club also acknowledged the support of organizations including RedOak Publishers, Child Online Africa, Ama Ata Aidoo Foundation, Saka Homes, and numerous individual donors whose contributions made the initiative possible.
