Accra is hosting the 5th Annual Conference of Pharmacoepidemiology in Africa from April 20 to 22, 2026, bringing together leading African and international health experts to focus on improving medicine safety across the continent.
The event is organised by the Africa Regional Interest Group (AfRIG) of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE), offering a platform for experts to share practical, locally driven solutions to pressing healthcare challenges. Key discussions are centred on medicine safety monitoring, tackling antimicrobial resistance, and encouraging the responsible use of medicines.
Ghana’s selection as host underscores its growing influence in pharmaceutical policy and medicine safety research. The conference also aims to strengthen collaboration among pharmacy professionals across Africa.
Pharmacoepidemiology, the field at the heart of the conference, applies population-based research methods to evaluate how medicines, vaccines, and other health products perform in real-world settings, assessing their benefits, risks, and usage patterns.
Participants are engaging in a comprehensive programme that includes keynote speeches, plenary sessions, scientific symposia, and both oral and poster presentations. Renowned researchers are also facilitating hands-on workshops, while early-career scientists have dedicated opportunities to interact and network with experienced professionals.
The conference seeks to foster stronger regional and global partnerships, promoting research that enhances the safe and effective use of health technologies across Africa.
Major global sponsors supporting the event include Boehringer Ingelheim, Regeneron, IQVIA, Johnson & Johnson, and Optima Clinical. Locally, key partners such as the Ministry of Health Ghana, the University of Ghana, the University of Cape Coast, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, the Pharmacy Council Ghana, and Medicines Utilization Research in Africa are providing strong support.
