The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has carried out an extensive clean-up operation at Agbogbloshie Market as part of efforts to address persistent sanitation concerns in the busy commercial area.
The exercise, which formed part of the monthly sanitation day activities, involved clearing choked drains packed with plastics, bottles and other waste materials.
Speaking during the operation, AMA’s Director of Waste Management, Solomon Noi, noted that waste management remains a major challenge in the market.
He also appealed to the Ghana Water Company Limited to tackle the issue of illegal pipe connections, which he said contributes to drainage problems in the area.
Mr Noi further urged residents and traders to work closely with sanitation authorities to prevent drains from becoming clogged again, stressing that proper waste disposal and routine maintenance are essential to maintaining a clean environment.
During the exercise, large volumes of refuse were removed from gutters along streets crowded with vehicles and market stalls, revealing the scale of waste produced by daily trading activities.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, disclosed plans to redevelop Agbogbloshie into a 24-hour economy market to stimulate economic growth and create more opportunities for traders.
To support this initiative, the Assembly intends to roll out a pilot programme that will provide traders with segregated waste bins. Funds from the government’s common fund have already been earmarked to facilitate the project.
Authorities say continued cooperation from traders and residents will be essential to tackling long-standing sanitation issues at Agbogbloshie and other markets across the city.
