Central Ohio’s Ghanaian community and supporters of African culture are set to celebrate a significant cultural milestone with the official coronation and enstoolment of Nana Ama Afowa I on Friday, July 17, 2026.

The ceremony, organised in collaboration with the Oguaa Traditional Council, the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Ohio Ghana Festival, aims to celebrate Ghanaian heritage, leadership and community service while strengthening cultural ties between Ghana and Central Ohio.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. at 867 Mt. Vernon Avenue in Columbus, Ohio.

Known privately as Janelle Coleman, Nana Ama Afowa I will officially assume the role of Abontsimdohenehemaa (Queen Mother) of the Oguaa Traditional Area. In this capacity, she is expected to champion the preservation of Ghanaian culture, promote education, mentor women and young people, support community development and foster stronger partnerships between Ghana and its diaspora.

Organisers say the occasion goes beyond a traditional coronation, describing it as a celebration of identity, service and leadership rooted in Ghana’s rich cultural heritage. They also noted that the event recognises the growing contributions of the Ghanaian community to the cultural and civic life of Central Ohio.

The programme will feature traditional royal rites, cultural music and dance performances, royal processions, presentations by dignitaries and a showcase of Ghana’s history and traditions.

The evening will also include a dedication ceremony, bringing together distinguished guests, community leaders and supporters to honour tradition and offer blessings ahead of the historic coronation.

Members of the Ghanaian community, elected officials, business and faith leaders, cultural organisations and the general public have all been invited to attend the celebration.
