Zoomlion Ghana Limited has established five waste transfer stations across Accra to receive refuse collected during the government’s two-day nationwide clean-up exercise.
The exercise, which commenced on Friday, July 10, 2026, was announced by President John Dramani Mahama in response to the devastating floods of June 29 that affected parts of Accra and other communities, leaving behind significant volumes of waste and debris.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Jospong Group, Sophia Kudjordji, said the temporary facilities were set up to handle the anticipated increase in waste generated during and after the exercise.
She explained that the transfer stations would function as interim collection centres where waste would be compacted before being transported to final disposal sites.
According to Kudjordji, waste would ordinarily be transported directly to landfill sites, but the limited availability of such facilities has made the use of transfer stations necessary.
She noted that Accra’s nearest landfill site is located at Adepa in the Eastern Region, making the transfer stations a more efficient option for waste management.
The five facilities are located at Achimota, Teshie, Mallam, Ashaiman and Abokobi.
Kudjordji added that while much of the waste collected during the clean-up would be taken to these transfer stations, some would also be transported to the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant for sorting and recycling.
She explained that the transfer stations would enable waste collection trucks to offload quickly and return to collection points, improving operational efficiency and allowing larger volumes of waste to be collected.
Kudjordji also encouraged individuals, local assemblies and waste management companies participating in the nationwide exercise to use the designated transfer stations to ease pressure on existing disposal facilities and support effective waste management efforts.
