Chelsea are in talks to sign experienced duo Jordan Henderson from Brentford and Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion as the club looks to add leadership and Premier League experience to its squad ahead of the new season.
The Blues are seeking a shift in recruitment strategy after club co-owner Behdad Eghbali acknowledged earlier this year that Chelsea’s policy of focusing primarily on young talent required a “tweak.”
Henderson, 36, has one year remaining on his Brentford contract, but the club is reportedly prepared to allow the former England captain to leave on a free transfer.
Welbeck, 35, is also understood to be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, with optimism growing that an agreement can be reached. The veteran striker enjoyed one of the best league campaigns of his career last season, scoring 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances for Brighton, his highest single-season league tally. Since joining the Seagulls from Watford in 2020, Welbeck has scored 51 goals in 201 appearances.
Brighton declined to comment on the reported interest. Welbeck signed a one-year contract extension in March, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2026/27 season.
Henderson made 34 appearances in all competitions for Brentford last season after joining from Ajax. His campaign was briefly interrupted after suffering a broken arm while celebrating England’s Round of 16 victory over Mexico at the FIFA World Cup.
Chelsea’s evolving transfer strategy
Chelsea’s pursuit of Henderson and Welbeck reflects a growing emphasis on balancing youth with experience.
The club previously attempted to sign Granit Xhaka, but Sunderland reportedly refused to sell the Switzerland international.
While Chelsea continue to invest heavily in younger talent—highlighted by the club-record £117 million signing of Morgan Rogers—they are also targeting players with proven Premier League pedigree. The club has already signed full-back Marco Palestra and is reportedly close to completing a £52 million move for Maxence Lacroix.
The arrivals of Henderson and Welbeck would provide valuable leadership to one of the league’s youngest squads following Chelsea’s disappointing 10th-place finish last season.
Competition for places in attack
Welbeck’s potential arrival could intensify competition among Chelsea’s forwards.
Joao Pedro is currently regarded as the club’s first-choice striker, while Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, and Nicolas Jackson are also on the books.
Guiu is reportedly available for either a permanent transfer or a loan move, with Chelsea valuing the striker at around £25 million. Jackson, who recently returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, is said to be open to leaving amid reported interest from Aston Villa.
Delap, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich for £30 million only a year ago, is also increasingly expected to depart after struggling to establish himself under manager Xabi Alonso. There is also uncertainty surrounding the future of Emegha despite his recent arrival from Strasbourg.
Welbeck’s value extends beyond goals
Although Welbeck is now 35, his performances last season demonstrated that he remains an effective Premier League striker. Beyond his goalscoring, he is widely respected for his hold-up play, ability to bring teammates into the game and his leadership qualities.
His experience and professionalism could prove invaluable in Chelsea’s youthful dressing room, making what initially appears to be a surprising transfer one that could significantly strengthen the squad both on and off the pitch.
