The Tamale Circuit Court has granted bail to two midwives arrested in connection with the disappearance of a newborn baby at the Salaga Government Hospital.
The suspects were each granted bail in the sum of GH¢150,000 with two sureties and are expected to return to court on July 9, 2026, as investigations continue.
The two health workers, a male and a female midwife, were arrested by police in Salaga on June 10 following reports that a newborn baby had gone missing from the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Confirming the arrests shortly after the incident, DSP Gabriel Alorsey stated that the suspects were taken into custody because they had provided conflicting accounts regarding the circumstances surrounding the baby’s disappearance.
The newborn has yet to be found, prompting growing concern among relatives and residents of the community.
Meanwhile, the family of the missing child has issued a three-day ultimatum to hospital management, demanding that the baby be found and returned. During a peaceful protest held at the hospital and police station on June 17, demonstrators warned that they would intensify their actions if no progress is made within the specified period.
Tensions surrounding the case have continued to rise. On June 15, the Member of Parliament for Salaga, Zuweira Ibrahima, was reportedly turned away by residents of the Kulpi community when she visited to sympathize with the family.
According to reports, the baby was receiving oxygen treatment in a tray at the hospital’s NICU when the incident occurred. Preliminary information suggests that two staff members on duty at the maternity ward allegedly left the baby unattended while attending to personal matters.
Upon returning a short while later, the staff reportedly discovered that the newborn was missing, triggering an investigation that led to the arrest of the two midwives.
Police investigations are ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and locate the missing child.
