Desire to succeed individually affecting Black Stars performance – Abdul Karim Razak

Ghana football legend Abdul Karim Razak says one basic problem that has hindered the progress of the Black Stars is the desire of players to excel individually.

According to the former African Footballer of the Year, most players see the Black Stars platform as a means to advertise themselves to foreign clubs.

In an interview with GNA Sports on the sidelines of the 30th GFA Congress in Prampram, Abdul Karim Razak, who is often known as the “Golden Boy,” lamented the lack of teamwork that had accounted for the team’s performance in major competitions.

“Now most of our players play abroad, and most of them want to excel individually but not as a team. The teamwork is not coming, and most want to play to advertise themselves for other clubs to see them.

“And for me, that is our main problem. We need teamwork because now we don’t have the long training hours as we used to do in the past where we camp for more than three or four months,” he said.

The former Kumasi Asante player also revealed that during their time most of the players played their hearts out and not necessarily for monetary benefits.

He noted that the large composition of local players who constituted the Black Stars in the past helped build team bonding and love for one another, which made them excel.

The Golden Boy further stressed the need to involve local players in the grooming of the national team, so that they could form a base of the national team.

When asked if he thinks Otto Addo would succeed in his second reign as Black Stars head coach, Abdul Karim Razak expressed his willingness to share ideas with the coach to help him succeed.
