The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that this year’s ban on drumming and noisemaking in the capital would begin on Monday, May 12 and end on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
A statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the AMA stated that the annual directive – observed in line with customs of the Ga Traditional Council was aimed at ensuring peace, harmony, and national security during the Nmaa Dumo period.
It said churches were expected to carry out their activities within their premises and refrain from using musical instruments. loudspeakers placed outside churches, mosques, and pubs have also been prohibited.
“Roadside evangelists are to cease their activities during this period,” the statement added.
The Assembly further urged religious bodies and traditional authorities to maintain mutual respect and avoid making derogatory or inflammatory remarks about each other’s beliefs and practices.
According to the AMA, during the one-month period funeral rites and all related activities were banned.
The enforcement of the ban would be carried out exclusively by a designated task force made up of AMA personnel, the Ghana Police Service, and representatives from the Traditional Councils.
“Apart from this identifiable task force with tags, no other person or group of persons should be seen or found enforcing the abatement of noise in the metropolis,” the statement warned.
It urged residents and communities within the Ga Traditional Area to comply fully with the guidelines for a peaceful observance of the customary restrictions.
“All are enjoined to abide by these guidelines for an incident-free Nmaa Dumo period. Accra, live in, love it!” the statement concluded.
