Ghana will implement a visa-free policy for all African travellers starting May 25, 2026, as part of efforts to promote regional integration and strengthen continental unity.

President John Dramani Mahama announced the policy during bilateral talks with Emmerson Mnangagwa at the Peduase Presidential Lodge. He indicated that the initiative will coincide with the celebration of Africa Day, allowing Africans to obtain e-visas free of charge before travelling to Ghana.

The President emphasised that the move is aimed at eliminating travel barriers across the continent, making it easier for Africans to move freely between countries such as Ghana and Zimbabwe. He also encouraged both nations to explore tourism partnerships, linking destinations like Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Cape Coast Castle in Ghana to boost cultural and economic exchange.

During the visit, the two countries signed 10 cooperation agreements covering various sectors to enhance economic growth and bilateral relations. President Mnangagwa expressed appreciation for Ghana’s support, particularly its stance on the removal of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe, describing it as a reflection of African solidarity and shared commitment to sovereignty.

He also urged swift implementation of the agreements to ensure tangible benefits, while commending Ghana’s role in advocating for the recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as a grave crime against humanity.

President Mahama, on his part, called for stronger collaboration in areas such as responsible mining and value addition. Both countries have agreed to establish a permanent joint cooperation framework that will meet every two years to deepen ties.

Zimbabwe is also seeking Ghana’s backing for its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

As part of his visit, President Mnangagwa toured the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and the Swedish Medical Centre.
