Ghanaian students studying on government scholarships at the University of Memphis in the United States say they risk being dismissed from the institution over the government’s failure to settle their tuition and accommodation fees.
The affected students say the university has issued notices demanding payment of outstanding fees after their attempts to resolve the matter with the Scholarship Secretariat yielded no results.
According to the students, the unpaid fees have already led to restrictions on their access to the university’s online portal, preventing them from accessing essential academic services.
One of the affected students told Citi News that they have less than a week to resolve the issue before facing further sanctions.
The student expressed concern that failure to settle the outstanding payments within the stipulated period could have serious consequences for scholarship beneficiaries.
“We have barely a week. If there is no solution to this problem, we are going to be in serious trouble. I don’t think the current administrative climate in the US will favour us in any way,” he said.
The students are appealing to the government and the Scholarship Secretariat to urgently intervene and settle the outstanding tuition and accommodation fees.
They say a failure to resolve the matter could result in the loss of their student status and disrupt their academic programmes.
