Member of the National Democratic Congress communication team, Hamza Suhuyini, has urged the government to adopt a digital approach for the planned nationwide firearm re-registration exercise, arguing that an online system would simplify the process and improve compliance among firearm owners.
His proposal follows the decision by the Ministry of the Interior to revoke all existing firearm licences effective June 23, 2026, and require gun owners to undergo a fresh licensing process under a more stringent regulatory framework.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on June 24, Suhuyini suggested that authorities make greater use of existing records held by the Ghana Police Service rather than relying solely on a new registration process that requires firearm holders to appear in person.
According to him, the police already possess valuable data on previously licensed firearm owners and could use that information to identify and contact individuals directly, encouraging them to comply with the new requirements.
He noted that many firearm owners may be discouraged from participating if they are required to go through another lengthy registration process, despite having registered their weapons in the past.
To address this challenge, Suhuyini proposed the creation of an online registration platform that would allow firearm owners to begin the process remotely by submitting relevant information, including photographs, serial numbers and other supporting documentation for verification.
He appealed to the Interior Ministry to ensure that the exercise is user-friendly, efficient and accessible in order to encourage wider participation and help achieve the objectives of the policy.
The call comes after Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak announced a comprehensive review of Ghana’s firearm licensing regime, citing weaknesses in the existing system and concerns about the misuse of legally acquired firearms.
The government’s planned relicensing exercise forms part of broader efforts to strengthen firearm regulation, improve accountability and enhance public safety across the country.
