President John Dramani Mahama has touched down in Arusha, Tanzania, ahead of the official opening of the Judicial Year of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, where he will serve as Special Guest of Honour and deliver the keynote address.
His appearance is historic, making him the first Ghanaian President to address the continental judicial body. The event will also mark the launch of activities commemorating the Court’s 20th anniversary, under the theme, “20 Years of Service in Protecting Human and Peoples’ Rights in Africa.”
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, President Mahama was welcomed by Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kom, along with other top officials. Also present were Ghana’s High Commissioner to Kenya with concurrent accreditation to Tanzania, Paul Evans Aidoo, and Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei of Ghana’s Supreme Court, who currently serves on the African Court.
The President is expected to deliver his address at 9:15 a.m. Ghana time, where he will highlight the need to reinforce continental systems dedicated to safeguarding human and peoples’ rights.
He is accompanied on the trip by his Legal Counsel, Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, as well as Presidential Advisor and Special Aide, Joyce Bawah Mogtari.
