President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare during the Free Primary Healthcare Programme Durbar held at the Ho Municipal Hospital in the Volta Region.
The event formed part of the President’s two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the region, which began on Thursday, July 16.
Addressing participants, President Mahama applauded the management and staff of Ho Municipal Hospital for a century of dedicated service and commended healthcare workers nationwide for their unwavering commitment to caring for Ghanaians.
He announced that the government has approved the recruitment of 16,000 nurses in two phases to strengthen healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved communities.
The President described the Free Primary Healthcare Programme as a significant milestone towards achieving Universal Health Coverage, noting that it will enable Ghanaians to access essential healthcare services at Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, health centres and polyclinics without financial hardship.
He also urged the public to prioritise regular health check-ups and adopt healthier lifestyles, emphasising that early detection is key to preventing serious illnesses.
In addition, President Mahama highlighted ongoing government investments in the health sector, including the establishment of new cardiac centres, improvements to the Ho Teaching Hospital, and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, which provides support for patients living with serious non-communicable diseases.
