A senior officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, Chief Officer Michael Osei-Bonsu, has been remanded into custody after being arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the Kete-Krachi Local Prison.
According to a statement issued by the Service on June 24, 2026, the officer was apprehended following routine security screening at the prison gate before the start of his night shift on June 19.
The Service explained that officers conducting standard checks detected and seized the suspected narcotic substance during the screening process, preventing it from entering the facility.
Following the discovery, Michael Osei-Bonsu was handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation.
He was subsequently arraigned before the Kete-Krachi District Magistrate Court, which ordered that he be remanded in custody for two weeks.
The court adjourned the case to July 8, 2026, for further proceedings.
In addition to the criminal case, the Ghana Prisons Service announced that the officer has been interdicted in accordance with its regulations pending the outcome of both the police investigation and internal disciplinary processes.
The Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict security standards and emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on drug-related offences and the smuggling of prohibited items, including narcotics and mobile phones, into correctional facilities.
It further commended the vigilance and professionalism of the officers whose routine security checks led to the detection and seizure of the suspected contraband.
