Bola Ahmed Tinubu has secured the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress ahead of Nigeria’s next general election, positioning him to seek a second and final four-year term.
Results announced on Sunday, May 24, showed that President Tinubu overwhelmingly defeated challenger Stanley Osifo during the party’s primaries held on Saturday.
Tinubu reportedly secured nearly 11 million votes, while Osifo received about 16,500 votes.
Since assuming office in 2023, Tinubu has implemented major economic reforms, including the removal of fuel and electricity subsidies, reforms to the foreign exchange system, and changes to Nigeria’s tax structure. The measures have drawn praise from some foreign investors, although they have also generated domestic debate over rising living costs.
Political analysts say Tinubu’s re-election prospects were further strengthened after attempts by opposition parties to form a united front and present a single presidential candidate reportedly collapsed earlier this month.
Tinubu was elected president in 2023 after defeating his main rivals in a closely contested election. The outcome was later challenged in court by opposition candidates, who alleged irregularities in the voting process, claims Tinubu denied while insisting the election was fair.
