Tsatsu Tsikata, one of Ghana’s most prominent legal thinkers, will be honored this month as he celebrates the 50th anniversary of his call to the Ghana Bar. This milestone has garnered admiration from the legal, academic, corporate, and governance communities.

A commemorative three-day event will be held from August 6 to August 8, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), under the theme: “Celebrating 50 Years of Tsatsu Tsikata at the Ghana Bar – 1975 to 2025.”

A statement issued in Accra said the celebration would highlight Mr. Tsikata’s life, work and impact through conversations, memories and reflections featuring his students, colleagues and friends from Ghana and abroad.

On the opening evening, August 6, discussions will center on Mr. Tsikata’s legal practice in the courts, military tribunals, corporate world and in prison.

Mr. Tony Lithur and Mr. Thaddeus Sory, both former students and respected legal practitioners, will initiate the conversations.

Mr. Goosie Tanoh, Presidential Adviser on the 24-Hour Economy, and Nana Appia Kyei, Director of Kosmos Energy Ghana and former Head of Exploration at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), will also speak.

Both worked with Mr. Tsikata during his tenure as GNPC Chief Executive Officer.

“Justice Emile Short, Ghana’s first Commissioner on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and a former Judge of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda at Arusha, Tanzania, will chair the session,” the statement added.

The second evening, August 7, will focus on Mr. Tsikata’s academic career, with former students sharing memories.

Speakers will include Kwesi Quartey, former Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission; Professor Martin Tsamenyi; and Christopher Quaye.

These recollections will precede a lecture by Professor Raymond Atuguba, outgoing Dean of the University of Ghana Law School, on “Challenges of Legal Education in Ghana.”

Mr. Doe Adjaho, former Speaker of Parliament and a former student of Mr Tsikata, will chair the session.

On August 8, Mrs. Betty Mould Idrisu, former Attorney General, and Mr. Kyeretwie Opoku, a lawyer who worked with Mr. Tsikata at GNPC, will speak on his broader involvement with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and national affairs.

Mr. Tsikata will then offer his personal reflections.

Professor Akilagpa Sawyerr, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, will chair the final session and deliver concluding remarks to close the celebration.
