    UGBS launches 3-year strategic plan

University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) has launched a three-year strategic plan (2021-2024) to respond to current trends and make it the preferred business school in the country.

The strategic plan is intended to enable the school to carry out its mission and vision effectively to reposition the school to respond appropriately to the changing needs of its stakeholders.

Replacing the school’s first strategic document which expired in July 31, 2021, the newly developed plan seeks to chart a new path towards delivering quality human resource capacity and leaders through the provision of world-class services.

The Dean of the UGBS, Professor Justice Nyigmah Bawole, at a ceremony to launch the strategic plan at University of Ghana (UG) in Accra, stated that the strategic plan was expected to guide the school to move towards achieving its vision.

He stated that the new plan had been purposefully designed on eight strategic pillars.

The pillars included excellence in teaching and learning; excellence in research; internationalisation and accreditation; and marketing communication and industry engagement.

Others are efficient financial management; development of world-class infrastructure; development of human resource competencies; and response management education, institutional and community engagement.

The dean explained that while some of the old strategic objectives were maintained because of their significance, others had been revised and added to reflect the current global trends in the industry.

He said the specific actions needed to achieve the various objectives and corresponding outputs over the planning horizon were also featured.

Prof. Bawole said the plan was accompanied by the implementation and monitoring arrangements as well as a budget.

“As a business school that trains people in how to manage their organisation, the least expected of us is to practice what we teach at the lecture halls.”

“I am very excited that the UGBS is launching its medium-term strategic plan today to guide its activities in the next three years,” the dean added.

The Provost of the College of Humanities at UG, Prof. Daniel Frimpong Ofori, who commended the UGBS for the initiative, noted that having a strategic plan in place was significant to enable institutions or individuals to track progress towards their respective goals.

He said a strategic plan could create an opportunity for organisations to be proactive rather than reactive.

“Designing a strategy makes you disciplined and focused to achieve the needed success. Without discipline and planning things will go bad,” he added.

A member of the UGBS management, Adelaide Addo-Fening, who represented the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, challenged institutions to be more resilient to be able to overcome challenges.

“This means that businesses must have understanding of the context, risk factors, competition and make sure that they can stand no matter the circumstances,” Mrs Addo-Fening added.
