WAEC Ready for 2026 BECE as Over 619,000 Candidates Prepare Nationwide

The West African Examinations Council has confirmed its readiness to conduct the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), scheduled to run from May 4 to May 11 across Ghana.

A total of 619,985 candidates have registered for this year’s exams, including 304,273 males and 315,712 females. The examination represents a key milestone for Junior High School students transitioning to the secondary level.

Candidates will sit for two papers each day—morning and afternoon sessions—across 2,302 centres nationwide. The BECE covers 11 subjects, with students typically taking nine, including core areas such as English Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, Creative Arts and Design, Career Technology, and a Ghanaian language.

Speaking to Onua News, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, stated that all materials have been prepared and will be distributed to metropolitan and district education offices ahead of the exams.

On funding, he explained that the government has released 70% of the required budget, with the remaining 30% expected after the examinations to cover marking and related processes.

To maintain the credibility of the exams, WAEC will collaborate with the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Police Service to supervise the process.

Mr. Kapi warned invigilators, supervisors, and all stakeholders against engaging in or facilitating examination malpractice, stressing that offenders will face strict sanctions under WAEC regulations.

He added that malpractice undermines the integrity of the education system and makes it difficult to accurately evaluate students’ performance.
