Some Kumasi Girls’ High School students have spoken out about how military and police officers assaulted them in their dormitories on Monday night. This was in response to a demonstration earlier in the evening at the school.

The students had staged a protest in response to the Ghana Health Service (GES) directive not to allow them to go home for the mid-semester break due to the Covid-19 surge.

According to the students, they were informed that they would be going home, but a few hours later, the head returned to inform them that their departure had been canceled. The majority of them were not pleased with the announcement, which prompted them to make noise and chant the words; “We will go home”

Security officers were called in by the school authorities to help maintain law and order. Instead of doing the assigned task, they assaulted some of the students.

A student told TV3 that the officers assaulted and beat up some of the students, leaving them with varying degrees of injury.

She said, “The school was noisy so police and soldiers were called to the school. They came to our dormitories and beat up some students. Even my dormitory, they beat some students to the extent that some were bleeding.”

She further said, “This is not logical because the say soldiers come to maintain calm and not to beat up people.”
