Political party youth activists have been urged to uphold and safeguard Ghana’s peace and unity before, during and after the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

They also need to promote peace and tolerance during the 2024 general election as more critical than ever to prevent violence during this period.

Mr Amatus Taalar, the Lambussie District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), made the call at Hamile, a border community in the Lambussie District during an engagement with the political party youth activists at some border communities in the district.

The NCCE organised the engagement as part of the planned activities of the Commission to promote peace during the electioneering under the European Union (EU)-funded project – “Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE) action in Ghana’s Northern Regions”.

The project aimed to prevent the infiltration of violent extremists into Ghana by building the resilience of people in the country, especially northern Ghana, against the urge for extremist activities.

Over 40 youth leaders from various political parties in the Lambussie Constituency, youth and women groups, Persons with Disabilities (PWPS), inter-faith-based leaders and artisans, among others, attended the forum focused on preventing election-related violence and promoting peaceful co-existence.

Mr Taalar said considering the dire need for peace during the critical moment, it was necessary to engage the youth activities to enhance their knowledge and attitude on the culture of peaceful coexistence, tolerance and non-violence.

He recommended regular engagement with youth leaders to reinforce the message of peace and tolerance and to collaborate with civil society organisations to promote peace education and conflict prevention.

Reverend Father Boniface Tansel, the resource person at the engagement, took the participants through the role of youth in promoting peace, peaceful coexistence and inter-faith tolerance, and identifying and countering misinformation and disinformation.

Mr Nicholas Hilleh, the Electoral Commission’s (EC) Returning officer for the Lambussie Constituency, exposed the participants to Ghana’s electoral processes, the Dos and Don’ts of a voter and the sanctions for violating electoral rules and regulations in Ghana.
