Mr Guggisberg Fiagbenu, Assembly Member for Adidome Central electoral area in Central Tongu, has commended the government for allocating GH242.5 million to support victims of the Akosombo dam spillage.

The fund, he believes, would go a long way in cushioning the effects of the spillage on affected communities. However, Mr Fiagbenu is calling on the government to pay particular attention to the plight of flood victims in Siamekome, a farming community severely impacted by the spillage.

He emphasized that these victims should receive a fair share of the allocated funds, highlighting the dire situation many find themselves in. “Some victims are still sleeping under trees, while others are overcrowded in single rooms due to lack of accommodations,” Mr. Fiagbenu lamented.

“Farmers lost their farmlands and crops, and fishermen lost their canoes due to the spillage, which occurred without prior warning.” In North Tongu, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed that many flood victims remain in tents and classrooms at Degorme Camps and Aveyime.

Some of the victims expressed their frustrations but indicated that they look forward to maximum support as government has allocated fund to help regain their livelihoods. Mr  Ahorsu Amos Borlor, Assembly Member for Mepe electoral area, noted that despite the challenges, the government’s commitment to supporting the victims is appreciated.

“We look forward to the fund being used purposefully to alleviate the burden on our affected brothers and sisters,” Mr. Borlor said.
