The Ghana AIDS Commission has revealed plans to roll out an HIV preventive drug in 2026 as part of measures to reduce the spread of the virus, which recorded over 15,000 new cases last year.
Speaking on Tuesday, September 30, Director-General of the Commission, Dr. Prosper Akanbong, said the initiative would not only boost prevention efforts but also enhance local pharmaceutical production capacity.
He explained that the vaccine has already been made a core element of Ghana’s HIV prevention strategy. While the country will initially import it, local pharmaceutical organisations are preparing to produce it domestically in the near future.
Dr. Akanbong further noted that consultations have been held with pharmaceutical firms, with support from GIZ, to ensure a sustainable and effective rollout.
