The Bank of Ghana is set to begin a year-long celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of the cedi, Ghana’s enduring symbol of economic sovereignty.

The Cedi@60 commemoration officially launches today, Tuesday, October 28, at the Accra International Conference Centre, under the theme “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.” President John Dramani Mahama will attend as the Special Guest of Honour.

First introduced on July 19, 1965, the cedi has undergone various reforms and redesigns, mirroring Ghana’s economic evolution and resilience over six decades of national growth.

The Bank of Ghana says the anniversary provides an opportunity not only to reflect on the cedi’s history but also to strengthen public confidence in the national currency as a foundation of economic stability and identity.

Activities lined up for the celebration include regional roadshows, public education campaigns on proper currency handling and security features, as well as youth competitions in art, music, and essay writing to foster greater appreciation of the cedi’s heritage.

A key feature of the programme will be a Currency Conference that brings together experts from central banks, academia, and the private sector to discuss Ghana’s monetary progress and the future of its financial system.

The central bank hopes the year-long commemoration will inspire renewed public commitment to protecting the integrity and value of the cedi for generations to come.
