The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has created temporary pedestrian crossing routes in Kaneshie following the closure of footbridges for ongoing repair works.
The alternative pathways are designed to maintain safe and orderly movement for pedestrians while rehabilitation of the bridges is underway.
During a visit to the area on Thursday, Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey appealed to residents, commuters, and drivers to comply with the new traffic arrangements, stressing that discipline is key to ensuring safety and easing congestion.
He cautioned motorists against parking along roadsides, explaining that such actions hinder pedestrian access and contribute to traffic build-up. He also reminded drivers to obey traffic rules and prioritise pedestrians at designated crossing points.
The mayor warned that disregard for these measures could result in accidents and other serious consequences, adding that authorities are prepared to strictly enforce the law.
Citing a recent incident where a driver attempted to defy traffic officers, Mr Allotey said the offender would be handed over to the police, underscoring the Assembly’s commitment to enforcement.
He urged the public to support the initiative, noting that improving the city requires cooperation from all stakeholders, including residents, motorists, and officials.
Mr Allotey further warned that any attempts to ignore the approved routes or interfere with the repair works would attract sanctions.
He assured the public that once completed, the upgraded footbridges would provide safer and more reliable infrastructure for pedestrians.
