The family of James Victor Gbeho has paid a courtesy visit to John Dramani Mahama to formally notify him of the veteran diplomat’s passing.
Representatives of the Gbeho family explained that, in keeping with cultural tradition and diplomatic protocol, it was important to officially inform the President of the death before any public announcement was made.
Ambassador Gbeho was widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most accomplished diplomats and public servants. Over the course of his distinguished career, he served in several diplomatic capacities, including assignments in New York, and held key national and regional leadership positions.
He served as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, represented the Anlo constituency in Parliament, and later became President of the ECOWAS Commission, then known as Executive Secretary.
Renowned for his commitment to regional integration and international diplomacy, Ambassador Gbeho played a significant role in advancing West African cooperation and strengthening Ghana’s presence on the global stage, particularly at the United Nations.
President Mahama expressed his sympathies to the bereaved family and reflected on Ambassador Gbeho’s lasting contributions to Ghana, the West African sub-region, and the international community.
The family indicated that details of the funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
