APSU 2002 Launches GH¢5.4 Million Teachers’ Housing Project for St Augustine’s College

The 2002 year group of the St Augustine’s Past Students Union (APSU) has unveiled a GH¢5.4 million legacy project aimed at improving teacher accommodation at St Augustine’s College in Cape Coast.

The initiative, known as BOLT – Building Opportunities for Learning and Transformation, will see the construction of a 14-unit single-storey apartment complex on the school’s campus. A fundraising campaign for the project was officially launched on June 19, 2026.

The housing facility is expected to ease accommodation challenges faced by staff, as only 60 out of the school’s 140 teachers currently live on campus.

Speaking at the launch event held at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel Accra, the Headmaster of St Augustine’s College, Rev. Fr. Dr Patrick Godfred Appiah, praised the APSU 2002 group for spearheading the project.

He noted that expanding on-campus accommodation for teachers would improve student supervision and discipline, particularly as enrolment continues to grow under Ghana’s Free Senior High School policy. He added that a larger resident teaching staff would enhance mentorship and support for students outside regular classroom hours.

Chairing the event, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, an alumnus from APSU’s 1961 year group, called on former students to uphold the values of unity and diversity that have long been central to the school’s identity.

He stressed that St Augustine’s College was founded on the principles of national cohesion and human capital development, noting that the friendships he built with students from different regions reflected the institution’s commitment to fostering national unity.

In a keynote address, Professor Ernest Kofi Abotsi, an APSU 1993 alumnus, encouraged old students to see contributions to their alma mater as a responsibility and service rather than a competition among graduating classes.

He emphasised that alumni support should demonstrate gratitude to the institutions that contributed to their personal and professional development. He also urged alumni groups to strengthen their finances through consistent payment of dues to support future development initiatives.

The launch attracted support from several alumni associations of sister schools, including HOPSA ’02, AMOSA ’02, BLEOO ’02, SANTA ’02 and MOBA ’02.

The BOLT project is scheduled for completion by December 2026 and is expected to enhance teacher welfare while creating a more supportive environment for teaching and learning at St Augustine’s College.

Supporters and alumni can contribute to the project through the APSU 2002 website: APSU 2002.
