Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, has reportedly been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Accra International Airport.
Senior officials of the NPP confirmed the arrest to the media.
In a Facebook post, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, alleged that Aboagye was apprehended by EOCO officers with the assistance of immigration officials before being taken into custody.
According to the statement, Aboagye’s legal team has been denied access to him, while his whereabouts remain unknown. It also claimed that no formal charges have been brought against him.
Kodua called on the authorities to grant the detained party official unrestricted access to his lawyers and family, citing Article 14(2) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which guarantees the rights of persons in custody.
He further described the arrest as an act of intimidation rather than a lawful enforcement action, alleging that it forms part of a broader pattern of politically motivated arrests, invitations and detentions involving members of the NPP.
The NPP General Secretary also urged state institutions to remain independent and operate within the confines of the law, warning against the use of public agencies for partisan purposes.
He nevertheless appealed to party supporters to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding while the party seeks further information regarding the circumstances surrounding Aboagye’s arrest.
