The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has initiated plans to build a Special Needs Centre at Burma Camp to enhance support for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. The project was unveiled by Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, as part of activities commemorating World Autism Awareness Month.

At the launch event on April 20, the Chief of Staff at General Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai, explained that the initiative aims to move beyond awareness by fostering deeper engagement and strengthening support structures for affected individuals. He highlighted the difficulties many families face, including limited access to specialised services, suitable educational environments, and broader societal acceptance.

To address these challenges, GAF plans to construct a fully equipped facility through All Needs Development. The centre will feature 42 accessible classrooms, offices, recreational spaces, an administration block, and dedicated therapeutic units. It will also offer services such as speech and language therapy, behavioural support, psychological evaluations, and counselling.

In a bid to meet international standards, the military benchmarked the project against the Spectrum Academy of Utah and conducted an assessment visit to Dzorwulu Special School. The Utah-based institution is expected to provide technical and management support upon completion.

Guest of Honour Ato Brown noted that this year’s theme, “Celebrate Differences,” underscores the importance of embracing diversity in learning and communication. He described the initiative as a significant step toward fostering inclusion and opportunity.

Dr Erica Danfrekua Dickson, Director of Mental Health at GAF Health Services, called for continued efforts to reduce stigma and recognise the unique abilities of individuals with neurodiversity. Special Guest Serwah Quaynor also urged institutions and security agencies to support the project and promote awareness.

To kickstart the initiative, the military high command donated GH₵500,000, with additional contributions coming from personnel and partner organisations.
