The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has entered into agreements with the Ghana Armed Forces and the Forestry Commission Ghana to undertake nationwide land reclamation, rehabilitation, and reforestation projects valued at GH¢27.9 million.
The initiative, fully financed by GoldBod, seeks to restore lands degraded by illegal mining activities across the country, beginning with the rehabilitation of 50 hectares within the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.
Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, explained that the programme will combine the technical expertise of military engineers with forestry specialists to carry out large-scale environmental restoration, including land reshaping, pit filling, grading, compaction, and ecosystem recovery.
He noted that the Ghana Army Engineer Regiment, operating under the Ministry of Defence, will provide support for critical civil engineering works in affected mining areas as part of the broader reclamation effort.
According to him, the programme is part of a national strategy to address widespread environmental damage caused by illegal mining activities and to promote sustainable land use and ecological restoration.
Gyamfi stated that the decision to begin the project at the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve followed assessments that revealed extensive destruction of vegetation in the area.
He described the situation as alarming, noting that once-rich forest cover had been severely degraded, which informed the choice to prioritize the area for immediate intervention.
The project marks the start of a wider national restoration agenda aimed at rehabilitating degraded lands and improving environmental sustainability across mining-affected communities in Ghana.
