Fidelity Bank Ghana has donated GH₵1 million to support the preparation and participation of Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The cheque was presented by the bank’s Managing Director, Julian Opuni, to the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, during a brief ceremony in Accra.
Speaking at the event, Opuni explained that the bank’s support reflects its commitment to national causes that inspire unity and collective pride. He stated that, as the largest privately owned Ghanaian bank, Fidelity believes it has a responsibility to contribute to initiatives that matter to the nation.
According to him, backing the Black Stars extends beyond football, serving as an opportunity to support a national symbol that brings Ghanaians together and fosters a shared sense of purpose.
Opuni also highlighted the role of sports in inspiring young people and promoting discussions around talent development, opportunity, and national growth. He noted that the donation aligns with Fidelity Bank’s broader investments in youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, and the creative economy.
He added that sports remains a powerful platform for encouraging ambition, discipline, and excellence among the younger generation and expressed confidence in the team’s World Cup journey.
Receiving the donation, Minister Kofi Iddie Adams praised the bank for answering the call to support Ghana’s participation on the global football stage. He emphasized that sports contributes significantly to economic activity and creates opportunities across multiple sectors, making private-sector involvement essential for sustainable development.
The Minister further stated that mechanisms have been put in place to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of funds allocated to sports development. According to him, strict budgeting and performance-monitoring systems will ensure that contributions are used effectively and for their intended purposes.
He noted that Fidelity Bank’s support comes at a crucial stage of preparations and will contribute to enhancing team readiness and fan engagement ahead of the tournament.
The donation forms part of Fidelity Bank’s wider commitment to national development through investments in education, entrepreneurship, sustainability, community development, and youth-focused initiatives. The bank continues to collaborate with stakeholders across various sectors to support programmes that promote long-term social and economic progress in Ghana.
