The National Democratic Congress has renamed its national headquarters in honour of its founder, Jerry John Rawlings, and unveiled a bust of the late statesman as part of events marking what would have been his 79th birthday.

The ceremony, held on June 22, 2026, was organised under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” and aimed to celebrate his contributions to Ghana’s political development and democratic governance.

Activities commenced with the official renaming of the party’s headquarters after Rawlings, a move intended to preserve the legacy of the man credited with founding the NDC and playing a pivotal role in the establishment of Ghana’s Fourth Republic. The event also featured the unveiling of a bust in his memory at the party’s headquarters.

The ceremony attracted senior party executives, supporters, and other dignitaries, who reflected on Rawlings’ impact on Ghana’s democratic journey and the enduring influence of his ideals within the party.

John Dramani Mahama was expected to address attendees alongside other prominent party leaders, paying tribute to the former military leader who later became a champion of constitutional democracy.

Rawlings, who died in November 2020, remains a towering figure in Ghana’s political history. He first governed as a military leader before overseeing the country’s transition to democratic rule and serving as Ghana’s first president under the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2001.

The renaming of the headquarters and installation of the bust reflect the NDC’s commitment to preserving the memory of its founder and reaffirming the principles and values he promoted throughout his public service.
