TikTok has announced plans to introduce a monthly subscription fee for users in the United Kingdom who prefer to use the platform without advertisements.

Beginning Monday, the social media platform will start notifying users aged 18 and above that they can choose between paying £3.99 per month for an ad-free experience or continuing to use the app for free with personalised advertisements.

Users are expected to make their choice by November 11.

According to TikTok, the new TikTok Ad-Free option is intended to provide users with greater control over how they experience the platform.

The move follows earlier testing of ad-free subscription services in selected international markets in 2023.

Similar subscription models have already been introduced by platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat, allowing users to pay for reduced or completely ad-free experiences.

TikTok said users who subscribe to the service will no longer see adverts placed by the platform within areas such as the “For You” feed.

However, sponsored content posted directly by creators, including posts labelled with tags such as “#ad,” will still appear on the app.

Kris Boger, TikTok’s UK Managing Director, stated that advertising on the platform continues to support British businesses by helping them reach customers and grow sales, while the new subscription option offers users more flexibility and control.

Social media analyst Matt Navarra described the development as part of a growing trend among digital platforms to place a financial cost on avoiding personalised advertising and online tracking.

According to him, the internet is increasingly moving toward a “consent or pay” model, where users either accept targeted advertising and data profiling or pay subscription fees for more privacy and control.

Navarra warned that the trend could gradually create a two-tier online experience, where users who can afford subscriptions enjoy more privacy while others continue to rely on ad-supported services.

The change also reflects the growing role of subscription services across social media platforms, where users are increasingly being offered paid features such as verification badges, exclusive tools and AI-powered services.
