Two Ghanaian brothers and a U.S.-based woman have been indicted in the United States over their alleged involvement in a romance fraud and money laundering network that targeted elderly victims through online dating platforms and social media.
The accused — Jamal Abubakari, known as “Arrangement,” his brother Kamal Abubakari, also called “Lancaster,” and Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie — were charged in a U.S. federal indictment with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
According to U.S. prosecutors, the suspects were arrested in Virginia and remain in custody as legal proceedings continue.
Investigators allege that between July 2024 and April 2026, the group used fake online identities to build romantic relationships with elderly victims, ultimately persuading them to send money to accounts controlled by the network. Some of the funds were reportedly moved to accomplices in Ghana and other locations.
The case is part of a wider crackdown on romance fraud schemes linked to Ghana, with several similar prosecutions already resulting in convictions and prison sentences in the United States.
In related cases, individuals such as Frederick Kumi (also known as Emmanuel Kojo Baah Obeng or “Abu Trica”) and Daniel Yussif (“Denteni” or “Slab”) were charged in December 2025 for similar offences, while others including Dwayne Asafo Adjei and Otuo Amponsah have already been convicted and sentenced to lengthy prison terms and restitution orders.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Cleveland Division, with support from agencies including Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Cyber Security Authority and the Ghana Immigration Service.
U.S. authorities stressed that the case falls under the Elder Justice Initiative, which targets financial crimes affecting elderly victims. They also noted that the indictment is an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
