The leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced some key initiatives, including financial aid, to help salvage the falling standards of officiating in the game in the country.
President of the GFA, Kurt Edwin-Simon Okraku, in a speech at the 29th Ordinary Congress held on Monday, in Kumasi noted that officiating in recent seasons leaves much to be desired, however, the association was committed to improving the situation and changing the storyline.
It is true that officiating has been one of the problems faced in the league. We need to make sure we fix the problems and I admit officiating is one area we have to take a critical attention and channel our power to making it better,” he said.
Financial aid
The GFA capo mentioned that the association would allocate a sum of GHS₵300,000 to support the payment of officiating fees at the regional level to ensure fair and competent refereeing in football matches.
He added that there will be a monthly allowance of GH₵1,000 for referee managers to recognize their crucial role in overseeing officiating activities.
“An amount of GH₵200,000 will be pushed to the Referee’s Committee to be fully funded and help develop the Catch Them Young Referees as well,” he said on training.
Background
Bad officiating has been the bane of the game in recent times, especially in the Ghana Premier League with certain officiating decisions generating violent reactions by some supporters.
