Government has provided some relief items to victims of the recent tidal waves attack at Agavedzi in the Ketu South Municipality.

The items included five maxi bags of maize, 500 bags of sachet water, two bales of blanket, five bales of used clothing, 50 plastic buckets, 30 plastic bowls and 100 pieces of plastic cups, meant to alleviate the plight of the victims. The coastal community along with neighboring Salakope was on Saturday evening (February 1) and Sunday morning (February 2) hit by the recurring menace, causing devastations barely two weeks after Agavedzi suffered the last episode on January 16.

Mr. Pascal Agbagba, Director of Emergency Operations, Volta Region National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) during the presentation at Agavedzi, said the items, were being given out from a joint donation provided by NADMO, Mr. James Gunu, the Regional Minister, and Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Member of Parliament for Ketu South, to lessen the burden on the victims.

He assured the community that the disaster management body would work together with other government agencies to find a lasting solution to the perennial tidal waves menace. “We’ve been thinking we need a sea defense to solve the problem. This donation is just to provide some form of immediate relief to the victims. We’ll be meeting with other agencies for a holistic approach towards finding a permanent solution to this recurring problem.

“We’re also aware of the situation at hand. Your burial ground has been affected and some of you are exhuming bodies of your relatives for reburial as a result. We want to assure you that we will liaise with health workers so that there will be an organized way of doing that to prevent any health emergency in the community.”

Earlier visit at the behest of the Regional Minister, saw the NADMO officials and some executives of the governing National Democratic Congress tour the community to identify the affected buildings to inform the right and immediate actions to be taken.

Mr. Eben Assah, Assembly member for Agavedzi in an interview with Ghana News Agency, expressed gratitude of on behalf of the chiefs and people of the community to the government for the thoughtfulness. He urged the authorities to take immediate and sustainable action to address the menace to save the community from being totally wiped off.
